These are assignments that we are to work on independently throughout the semester. These are expected to be completed by assigned deadlines if you wish to earn a passing grade.

History Essay (Photo II and III students)

Blog:
Instructions HERE for setting up your blog. Once setup, copy the link and email it to me with your full name.
The blog will be where you will publish all of our assignments as we do them. This will be your portfolio at the end of the semester, from which a very large part of your final grade will come.
How to use the Blog:
The Main or Home page of your blog is where you will post your bi-weekly projects. 2 photos every 2 weeks.
Individual ‘Pages’ will be made for specific projects, exercises, and our portfolio at the end of the semester.
Each entry is to be clearly titled to describe what it is, ex. Project: 1, Project 2, (if you have a name for the piece it should follow).
All posts and discussion is to be directly to the work and objective in nature. Do not use the word ‘LIKE’. You don’t have to like it to comment on the composition, design, or image quality.

Morgue
A Morgue is what artists and designers call their collection of work by other artists to inspire their own work and to learn from. We are going to use it for these purposes, but primarily to help develop our eyes to better understand what an good photograph is. You may collect as many images as you like however 50 is the minimum expected in your final portfolio.
Pintrest is a GREAT tool for this, it has an endless collection to find images, and you can organize it by categories. If you already have a Pintrest account, just make another collection for our class.
Guidelines:
All of the images are to be Black and White.
35 of the 50 are to be from historical significant photographers.  Photographers who’s work has made a significant impact in the field (fine art, photojournalism, documentary, commercial, etc. (See the list for the History Essay for a place to start)
The other images should be chosen for the image quality. You should use them to help you in your own work in achieving a well developed image that reaches the full tonal range. This will be our goal throughout the semester.
History Essay: Photo II and III (Photo I may do this assignment for extra credit with prior approval).
Select a photographer from the list below, research, collect samples of there work, and write about them. (Minimum 2 pages as described in the descriptive essay). The essay should include the basic biographic info, born (died if applicable), where they lived, where educated, what they did, how they influenced the field and about what you find interesting about him or her.  Your essay, and samples of the artists work, is to be posted on a septate page of your blog on or before the assigned date.  APA style, and references expected. Sources must include book, and Internet.
In addition to writing your own essay, you are to read and write a comment on the rest of the classes essay’s. Nothing elaborate, simply write about 2 or 3 things you find interesting about the designer. You comments must come from the essay itself, not just the work.
NOTE: The weeks that your history essay is due you are exempt from the Descriptive Essay. If done this will count as extra credit on your final grade.
